There are loads of diets out there which promote massive weight loss in a very limited period of time. Do they actually work? Are they good for you? Is losing weight faster better than a slower, more paced diet plan?
The answer is yes and no. Lets look at the pro's and con's:
Energy Levels
Losing weight fast can cause severe energy fluctuations. When your body loses weight in a very short period of time, it doesn't get time to catch up and 'even out' its energy consumption and energy burning levels. Your metabolism takes time to adapt to changes, and losing weight too quickly will just cause your body to burn less calories. So when you do eat a lot, your body will turn most of it back to fat, making you gain more weight again.
Losing weight at a slower pace however, will help your body adapt better to the changes, and as a result it will burn calories more efficiently and help to maintain an even weight and reduce weight fluctuations.
Stretch Marks
If you are overweight, and then suddenly lose a lot of weight, your skin does not have time to re-adjust to the loss of weight and can result in permanent stretch marks. This is exactly the same as what happens to pregnant women after they have their baby.
Losing weight at a more gradual pace gives your skin time to adapt and tighten as the weight comes off, resulting in much tighter and toned skin. If done correctly, you'll have no stretch marks at all.
